FPA Australia responds to Victorian Building Commission Misconduct Allegations

Several media outlets have reported that the Victorian Building Commission is being investigated by State Ombudsman George Brouwer in relation to allegations of corruption, serious misconduct and harassment. Alarmingly for the fire protection industry, the reports also reveal allegations that Building Commission officials recieved improper payments to award building licenses without appropriate approval and that some Commission officials received payments for stopping formal complaints from being investigated. FPA Australia welcomes any potential investigation by the Victorian Ombudsman into the operations of the Building Commission to identify and treat any proven issues.

Important Announcement: Mandatory Safety Standards & Certification of Portable Fire Extinguishers

FPA Australia is highlighting serious concerns raised by the Technical Advisory Committee for Portable and Mobile Equipment (TAC/3/7) in relation to the manufacture, distribution, supply and sale of portable fire extinguishers that do not meet the requirements of mandatory safety standards. Members have identified increasing occurrences of fire extinguishers being sold in Australia that may not comply with the relevant standards.

Building code awareness needed to avoid repeat of CBD fire incident

A better understanding of Building Code of Australia requirements is necessary to ensure dangerous fire emergencies, such as a recent office fire in Melbourne's CBD, are avoided. The fire, which occurred on the seventh floor of the St James Building at 121 William Street on March 5, is believed to have been sparked by welding work as part of scheduled renovations. Alarmingly, firefighters attending the scene were unable to access water from the building's hydrant system as water supply had been shut off for the refurbishment work.

On 7 December 2011 the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office (VAGO) released a report on compliance with the Building Act 1993 which identified a range of concerns and recommendations for improvement. Of particular consequence for the fire protection industry and community is the identified lack of evidence to demonstrate compliance with fire safety standards.

FPA Australia increases technical advice for members

Technical Advisory Note TAN01 addresses the issue of simultaneous water flow requirement.
This TAN identifies relevant Australian Standard requirements and provides recommendations for application.
It is an example of the members-only document that are now being developed by FPA Australia and its Technical Advisory Committees (TACs), Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and State Committees. This and future TANs and members-only documents will be made available in future on a secure members-only website.

The grass roots flock to Fire Expo 2011

From 16 – 17 March 2011, over 600 people from the grass roots of the fire industry converged on the Castle Hill RSL for Fire Expo 2011. The expo, comprising of 25 exhibitors within 33 booths and 14 workshops, was hosted by the FPA Australia NSW State Divisional Committee.
The theme this year was Preparing for a New Fire Industry and the subject created plenty of discussion amongst industry attendees. The event also raised over $600 for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Charlie made a significant contribution to the development of Standards in Australia and our sympathies are extended to Charlie’s family and friends. He will be sadly missed.
